The Power of Deep Breathing
May 21, 2025
As a child, you breathed properly—taking deep breaths by using your stomach muscles to get as much air as deep into your lungs as possible. Over time, stress can cause our muscles to tighten up and that increases our breathing rate. We become thoracic breathers, meaning we use only the middle and upper parts of the lungs. This does not get the right amount of oxygen flowing through our body.
How breathing right can make you feel good
Proper breathing brings more oxygen into our bodies. Experts believe that proper breathing can reduce the effects of stress, lower blood pressure, improve poor digestion, decrease anxiety, and more!
Breathe like a kid again
Take a moment to observe your breathing pattern.
- Place your hands on your stomach as you breathe in and out.
- You should feel your stomach expand or push out when you breathe in.
- As you breathe out, your stomach should go down again.
Classes in meditation, yoga and tai chi focus on incorporating basic breathing techniques into everyday life. Or, take a few minutes at home each night to practice deep breathing. It can make you feel better and more refreshed—now and long term.
