Shut Down Sugar Cravings

Have you ever wondered why your brain craves bread, crackers, cereal and sweets – because they stimulate the “feel good” hormone serotonin. But, there are replacements that can leave you feeling just as happy and fulfilled.

Chromium—This metal plays an important role in insulin’s regulation of blood glucose, and plays a role in energy production. Chromium prevents the spikes and dips of blood sugar. It also helps with depression and lowering “bad” cholesterol. Take just 200 mcg once a day at the start of any meal to prevent the sugar spikes that often leave you reaching for more sugar later.

Fruit, fruit and more fruit—By adding naturally sweet foods to your meals you can trick your taste buds into thinking they are getting sweets. Whether it’s whole or dried fruit, or adding cranberry jam to your turkey sandwich at lunchtime, it’s easy to get that sweet bite at every meal.

Combine foods—If the idea of eating just a mini candy bar is laughable, try combining it with a healthy replacement. Dip bananas in chocolate sauce or create a trail mix with nuts and chocolate chips. You can have healthy alongside your sweet (as long as the healthy outweighs the sweet).

Eating smart during the holidays is easier said than done. If you need a little extra support, talk with a counselor through the Life Assistance Program. It’s free for you and your family.
