Below is a checklist of the basics. Cover these things with your doctor to get the most out of your next visit and to start taking control of your healthcare.

When you set your appointment, verify the doctor’s office takes your insurance and are in-network. Also, ask about pricing and billing. If you have a Flexible Spending Account verify how claims will be handled.

Talking with your doctor

Always be honest. Your doctor has heard it all before, so leaving out details will only hurt you. You should also:

• Agree on a plan of action with your doctor
• Ask questions that you have prepared before your appointment
• Take notes
• Write down all instructions
